Dry film thickness (DFT) is a critical parameter in protective coatings, essential for ensuring quality and durability. This paper explores the advancements in DFT measurement techniques, particularly focusing on modern electronic gauges that offer rapid and accurate readings, enabling the analysis of coating thickness across various projects. The objective is to compare the requirements and standards of DFT measurement set by Australian, SSPC, and ISO standards and highlight the discrepancies that arise from old measurement techniques. Methodologically, the study involves a review of standard practices and an evaluation of typical DFT readings to identify areas needing improvement in specification and measurement processes. Results indicate that while electronic gauges significantly outperform manual methods, there remain inconsistencies in the standards that can lead to inefficiencies in measuring DFT. The paper emphasizes the importance of aligning measurement techniques with contemporary technology to enhance the accuracy and reliability of DFT assessments in painting applications.
