This chapter provides an in-depth overview of solid-liquid extraction, specifically the leaching process, which involves the separation of a solute from a solid mixture by dissolving it in a liquid phase. The primary objective is to delineate the leaching process and identify significant factors influencing extraction rates including particle size, solvent choice, temperature, and fluid agitation. The methodology encompasses a theoretical analysis using mass transfer equations to approximate transfer rates from solid particles to the bulk liquid, addressing complexities such as diffusion coefficients and mass transfer coefficients. The results reveal the importance of these factors and provide equations that describe the rate of transfer and the efficiency of washing processes, incorporating concepts such as solvent decantation and residue solute fraction. By employing practical examples and calculations, this work illustrates the application of various methods to determine crucial parameters in the leaching process. The insights gleaned herein are significant for both academic and industrial applications, emphasizing the interplay of chemical and physical processes in effective solid-liquid extraction.
