The fusion of synthetic biology with engineered materials is opening powerful new pathways to tackle urgent environmental and industrial sustainability challenges. This review explores the creation, underlying mechanisms, and real-world performance of biohybrid living systems — integrated platforms that combine living microorganisms (or synthetic consortia) with functional abiotic materials at multiple length scales. We examine major architectural strategies including conductive living interfaces, 3D-structured living composites, encapsulated microbial communities, and surface-engineered cyborg cells. Key application areas include direct carbon dioxide and methane valorization, destruction of recalcitrant pollutants (PFAS, microplastics, antibiotics), enhanced bioprocessing of renewable feedstocks, and delivery of beneficial microbes for soil regeneration. Core interfacial phenomena — extracellular electron transfer, quorum sensing control, microenvironment engineering, and mechano-biological signaling — are analyzed to reveal design principles that govern efficiency, stability, and long-term function. We also address translational bottlenecks: scalability, long-term ecological stability, biocontainment, life-cycle sustainability, and regulatory considerations, with critical analysis of performance metrics and technology readiness. By synthesizing cutting-edge developments and highlighting critical research gaps, this perspective argues that rationally designed biohybrid systems can become foundational technologies for a circular, low-carbon bioeconomy and effective planetary-scale environmental repair.
