Saprolitic ores from Sulawesi Island (SS ore) contain serpentine and goethite as major minerals, whereas the main minerals in saprolitic ore from Halmahera Island (SH ore) are talc and goethite. This study aimed to investigate the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, and ore particle size on nickel extraction from these two saprolitic ores. The research revealed that the nickel leaching efficiency from SS ore consistently exceeded that of SH ore under identical leaching conditions. The variations in mineral contents significantly influenced the leaching performances and mineral dissolution behaviors. Results indicated that all dissolved nickel originated from serpentine, which is leached more easily compared to goethite and talc. Furthermore, the rate of nickel extraction for SS ore was found to be faster than that for SH ore, with both ores' nickel leaching processes conforming to the shrinking-core model, being governed by the diffusion of either reactants or products through the solid product layer. This study highlights the potential of atmospheric citric acid leaching in nickel recovery from low-grade saprolitic ores.
