Abstract

Language:

Current world production of titanium, at 60,000 tons per year, is insufficient when considering its unique properties, suggesting it should reach 1,000,000 tons annually to meet demand. To achieve this production level, competitive pricing through electrolytic methods is essential, yet commercial electrolytic titanium plants are absent due to various challenges including industry decisions, scientific limitations, and a lack of support from consumers. This paper discusses the viability of a fluoride high temperature process, highlighting its advantages akin to aluminum electrolysis and additional benefits specific to titanium materials. A proposed electrolytic titanium potroom would streamline production processes used in conventional sponge production, resulting in titanium ingots of zero defects and solidified cathode slabs that can be directly rolled. The analysis combines economic and metallurgical perspectives to elucidate the historical delays in transitioning to electrolytic titanium production, contrasting it with the expedited commercialization of other nonferrous metals. Ultimately, it emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the titanium industry to facilitate investment and innovation.
