Abstract

Language:

This article addresses the challenges associated with the production of titanium, a reactive metal known for its advantageous properties yet underutilized due to high costs compared to metals like steel and aluminum. The traditional pyrometallurgical Kroll process, which involves carbo-chlorination of titanium minerals to produce TiCl4 vapor, is discussed as a common method, followed by its reduction to titanium metal using magnesium. An alternative approach utilizing an electrochemical route is proposed, aimed at reducing costs and eliminating the chlorination step. The article conducts a comprehensive literature survey to explore various innovative technologies developed for titanium production, providing insights into their merits and demerits. Additionally, the authors report on their experimental attempt to produce ferro-titanium through a modified FFC process, highlighting both the potential and challenges faced in implementing this method for titanium production. The findings underscore the need for developing cost-effective production technologies to enhance the utilization of titanium in various applications.
