This study investigates the leaching mechanism and behavior of rare earth elements (REEs) from roasted coal gangue utilizing citric acid as a leaching agent. The primary objective is to enhance the recovery efficiency of valuable REEs from coal gangue, which is a byproduct of coal processing. Through a series of laboratory experiments, the effects of various parameters such as citric acid concentration, leaching time, and temperature on the extraction rates of REEs were systematically analyzed. The methodology involved batch leaching tests combined with characterizations of the residual materials to understand the leaching process better. The results indicate that citric acid significantly improves the leaching efficiency of REEs compared to conventional methods, revealing complex interactions between citric acid and the mineral matrix. Optimal conditions for leaching were identified, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient recovery of rare earths from waste materials. This research not only provides insights into the recovery of REEs but also highlights the potential of citric acid as an environmentally friendly reagent in hydrometallurgical processes. The findings have broader implications for the recycling of critical materials from industrial waste, aligning with sustainable development goals.
