Abstract

Language:

This study presents electron micro-probe investigations of limonite and saprolite samples taken from a nickel-cobalt laterite deposit located in the South-West Pacific. The primary objective was to elucidate the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics essential for informing metallurgical testwork and evaluating processing options for the deposit. The methodology involved detailed mineralogical studies initiated in 1991, followed by further research in 1995, aimed at understanding the distribution and phases of target elements, particularly nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and chromium (Cr). The analysis reveals a complex relationship between mineral phases in the limonite and saprolite layers, alongside variations in chemical composition that are vital for implementing various beneficiation strategies. Results indicate that the limonite layer is predominantly composed of a goethitic matrix, with significant secondary mineral phases, while the underlying saprolite exhibits a broader diversity in mineralogy. The findings contribute to strategic considerations for the development of both lateritic concentrates through flotation and alternative processing methods, such as pressure acid leaching, underlining the importance of initial geochemical studies in maximizing recovery efforts.
