This paper presents an improved appraisal process that correctly recognises the increased expected value of mining operations attributable to intelligent management response to changing operating conditions and market prices. It highlights the option value of flexibility in the exploitation of deposits, leading to better selection of properties for finance and development. The evaluation method employed is based on a computationally efficient procedure designed to examine the opportunities presented by potential price changes throughout the project lifetime. By using a limited range of typical price profiles, this method encompasses the broad spectrum of possibilities without requiring exhaustive exploration. This approach contrasts with conventional analyses that assume static prices over the project's duration. The procedure was developed collaboratively with experienced mining professionals and is grounded in real-world cases from mining and other extractive industries, enhancing its practical relevance and application across the sector. The findings illustrate significant improvements in expected net present value compared to traditional models, suggesting the importance of incorporating flexibility into mining project appraisals.
