This review examines the atmospheric leaching (AL) of nickel laterite ores with sulphuric acid, specifically the limonite, smectite (clay) and saprolite fractions. The objective is to evaluate the kinetics and mechanism of leaching of the key minerals and to explore methods for enhancing nickel recovery. A comprehensive methodology is employed to assess existing and developing AL processes for extracting nickel and cobalt from these ores, comparing them to the higher pressure acid leaching (HPAL) technology. Furthermore, the review provides insights into emerging hybrid HPAL/AL and heap leaching technologies. The findings indicate that the ongoing development of new technologies is crucial for the economical processing of nickel-rich laterite ores given the substantial reserves they represent and the growing global demand for nickel. This work underscores the potential advancements in recovery techniques and the importance of atmospheric leaching in the sustainable extraction of nickel.
