Evaluation of - 0.045 mm tailings in the Tunçbilek Coal Preparation Plant Wastewater as a Cement Raw Material

In this study, the clay present in the Tunçbilek Coal Preparation Plant tailings is investigated for its potential use as a cement material, aiming to recover approximately 330,000 tons of tailings per year into the economy. Characterization tests were conducted on slurry samples taken from the input of the thickener tank following solid-liquid separation processes. The test results indicated that the original tailings comprised approximately 25% clay minerals and that 80% of mineral materials were under the 0.045 mm size fraction, primarily including clay types such as kaolinite and illite. Chemical analysis revealed the tailings contained 47.47% SiO2, 17.39% Al2O3, and 6.35% Fe2O3. For the preparation of farin and clinker, a mixture of 21.31% tailings with a particle size of -0.045 mm and 78.69% limestone was used. The results of standard cement tests were found to be 0.970, 0.967, 2.150, 2.748, 2.160, and 0.573 for different cement standards, indicating that the tailings can be successfully utilized as a cement constituent in the industry.
