The present study investigates heavy metal contamination in the dump-fields of Podlipa and Reiner (Ag) deposit, located at the boundary of a village settlement. The objective is to determine the distribution of heavy metals in technogenous sediments and soils, as well as their effects on surface water, drainage water, and groundwater during different weather conditions. A comprehensive methodology involving the speciation of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) was employed, revealing the presence of both toxic and less toxic species, primarily As3+ and Sb3+ in water, while As5+ and Sb5+ dominated sediments. Additionally, the degradation of plant tissue under heavy metal contamination was compared with that from reference sites. Results indicated that the cementation process leads to iron substitution by copper within the sediment matrix. Notably, the technogenous sediments and contaminated soils exhibited limited acidification potential. The study proposes the installation of an iron zero (Fe0) barrier as a feasible solution for groundwater remediation. The findings contribute to understanding the environmental implications of heavy metal pollution from mining activities, highlighting the need for effective mitigation strategies.
