Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the concentration of uranium in phosphate mines, specifically focusing on the Minjingu phosphate mine in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The main objective is to assess the levels of terrestrial radionuclides and their implications for health and environmental safety. Using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry, samples of phosphate rock were analyzed, and activity concentrations were determined for various isotopes including 226Ra/238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs. Results indicate that activity concentrations ranged significantly, with 226Ra/238U observed between 122.5±6.9 to 8060±806 Bq kg–1 and a radium equivalent activity spanning from 219.27±00 to 9127.07±00 Bq kg–1. The estimated total absorbed dose at a height of 1 meter from the ground ranged from 102.1 to 3967.8 nGyh–1, with an average of 1055.9 nGyh–1. A peak uranium concentration of 650±65 ppm was found, indicating that the uranium levels are significantly higher than what is considered economically viable. This finding highlights the potential for producing cleaner fertilizers based on the existing uranium concentration.
