Waste heat to power (WHP) is the process of harnessing thermal energy discarded by industrial processes to generate electricity, a largely untapped potential in combined heat and power (CHP) systems. This paper reviews the opportunity for utilizing waste heat from energy-intensive industries such as refineries and steel mills, emphasizing the benefits of integrating WHP into existing thermal processes. Methodological insights include the exploration of various CHP configurations, such as topping and bottoming cycles, and their applications in different temperature ranges of waste heat streams. Results indicate that WHP systems can significantly enhance energy efficiency by reducing primary energy use and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, while converting otherwise wasted heat into usable power. The findings highlight the importance of implementing WHP technologies to improve overall energy performance in industrial settings.
