The electrical conductivity of a molten ternary mixture comprising Na3AIF6, Li3AIF6, and AlF3 with a molar ratio of n(Li3AIF6):n(AlF3) = 1:2 was investigated to enhance the understanding of low melting baths used in aluminium electrolysis. The objective was to determine how the addition of various compounds such as Al2O3, CaF2, and MgF2 influenced the conductivity of the system. Experimental methods involved measuring conductivity across different compositions and temperatures. The results indicated that the conductivity can be expressed via a specific equation which incorporates the effects of the added components on the conductivity variation. This study reveals that incorporating these additions can significantly impact the efficiency of the electrolysis process by potentially lowering energy consumption and increasing current efficiency. It is suggested that further experimental data on ternary and quaternary mixtures are necessary to provide a comprehensive understanding of these low melting baths and their performance in industrial applications.
