Abstract

Language:

Technological advancements in mineral processing have increased the feasibility of refining low-grade ores, resulting in the production of larger volumes of waste material due to the depletion of high-grade ore deposits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of high-density paste backfill (HDPB) as a safe disposal method for copper/zinc mine tailings. To address the environmental challenges posed by sulfidic tailings, the methodology involves assessing the benefits of using HDPB for underground backfilling instead of traditional surface disposal methods. The results indicate that HDPB not only reduces operating costs but also minimizes the environmental impact associated with the surface storage of harmful waste materials. This approach addresses the critical need for sustainable waste management in mining operations, especially in light of stringent environmental regulations. The findings suggest that implementing HDPB can enhance the overall profitability of mining operations while ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
