During the design of Cobalt solvent extraction using Cyanex 272 as extractant, the presence of Magnesium in the solvent extraction feed solution makes the experimental procedure of Cobalt solvent design unusable. The batch counter current test works at 100% mixing efficiency, and it is impossible to take account the recycled solution from the scrubbing circuit in the design of the extraction circuit. Only the computer program can design this configuration. This publication provides the procedure for the design of Cobalt solvent extraction from solutions containing Magnesium. This procedure utilizes the McCabe Thiele method, which simplifies thermodynamic equilibrium conditions for the design of solvent extraction circuits when the feed solution comprises more than one metallic element.
