This paper presents the different technologies used in the generation of large controlled currents, in the kiloamperes range. The objective is to review processes that require large currents and discuss the working principles of commonly used thyristor phase-controlled rectifiers. Methodologically, the paper introduces chopper-rectifiers utilizing high-current insulated gate bipolar transistors as an alternative to traditional rectifier circuits. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the pulsed-width-modulated current-source rectifier, currently employed in medium-voltage motor drives, illustrates another option for rectification in industrial processes. The results reveal the critical requirements and specifications for these high-power units while comparing thyristor and chopper-rectifiers based on their control quality, harmonics generation, power losses, and overall efficiency. This comparison highlights the advancement and potential future trends in the technology of large current rectifiers.
