Advances in genetic and metabolic engineering have enabled the development of custom-designed biopolymers, specifically silk proteins, which hold promise for creating high-value medical devices. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo biological responses to silk proteins functionalized with bone sialoprotein (BSP). The methodology involved the engineering of silk proteins to incorporate BSP, followed by implantation in animal models to assess biological interactions and tissue response. The results demonstrated enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation on BSP-functionalized silk proteins compared to non-functionalized controls, indicating a significant improvement in biocompatibility and potential for application in tissue engineering. The study highlights the effectiveness of silk proteins as biocompatible materials and underscores the potential of functionalization strategies to enhance the biological performance of silk-based biomaterials. These findings contribute to the understanding of silk protein applications in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering sectors.
