Several differently pre-treated AZ31 Mg alloy surfaces are tested for their suitability for recently developed "electroless" E-coating. The objective is to identify the optimal surface preparation method to enhance the protection performance of this E-coating on Mg alloys. Methodologically, both dry and wet surface preparation processes are employed, including wet-abrasion and heat treatment. Results indicate that the protection performance of the "electroless" E-coating significantly improves when the alloy surface is properly wet-abraded and heat-treated. Based on these findings, a practical surface preparation technique is proposed to facilitate the application of "electroless" E-coating on Mg alloys.
