The phosphate industry produces huge volumes of waste, generating hundreds of millions of tons per year, which are typically landfilled, causing significant environmental impacts. This review examines current practices in phosphate waste management, the typology of waste streams, their characteristics, and potential applications. It encompasses all waste generated during the lifecycle of phosphoric acid production, from phosphate rock extraction to enrichment and transformation. The study identifies considerable opportunities for circularity, focusing on recovering residual phosphorus and critical minerals while considering phosphate waste as alternative resources in civil engineering and building sectors. The aim is to shift from linear to circular thinking, promoting synergies among various mining and other industries. This transition holds the potential to safeguard natural resources and minimize environmental and societal impacts. However, several challenges inhibit this shift, including economic and technical constraints, societal and policy-maker awareness, regulatory harmonization, and knowledge gaps. Continued efforts and investments in research and development are required to achieve the zero-waste target.
