Epidemiological Study of the Effects of Uranium Mining Residues

This study, part of the MinUrar project, investigates the radioactive contamination and exposure levels in areas affected by uranium mining and milling, focusing on implications for public health. The objective was to assess the presence of radioactive materials and their impact on local populations. Methodologically, the study involved multiple field sampling campaigns conducted in select counties, where soil, water, vegetables, and aerosols were collected. In situ measurements of external radiation dose rates and radon concentrations were made, alongside the deployment of integrative radon dosemeters and thermo-luminescent dosemeters in selected homes and outdoor areas. The analytical process included significant sample evaluations through alpha and gamma spectrometry as well as liquid scintillation counting. Results indicated that most historical uranium mining sites did not show elevated radiation levels or radionuclide concentrations; however, a few sites with chemical treatment processes exhibited higher contamination. Preliminary findings were presented at an international workshop focused on the environmental impacts of uranium production, alongside progress reports made available to the public. The final comprehensive report is anticipated for the following year.
