THE PHILIPPINE PHYSICS SOCIETY (PPS): INFORMATION AND TRADITIONS

The Philippine Physics Society (PPS) was established in 1974 in Cebu City to serve as a platform for physicists and physics enthusiasts, primarily benefiting the regions of Visayas and Mindanao. As an organization, the PPS has evolved to encompass a wider membership, including physics professionals, teachers, and students, emphasizing improvement in research and teaching within the field of physics. The main objective of this society is to advance physics education and research across the Philippines through community building and shared resources. This paper provides a detailed history of the PPS, tracing its origins from a modest group of physics graduates to a prominent national organization. Methodologically, the study reflects on the society's foundational philosophies which include self-reliance, sharing, indigenization, and socialization, all aimed at fostering a supportive community. Key results indicate that the PPS has successfully advocated for inclusive membership and the provision of physics resources in underserved areas, which underscores its commitment to broadening the access and appreciation of physics in the Philippines.
