New recommendations and future standards have increased the interest in power factor correction circuits. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various solutions for single phase and low power applications, which are classified based on the line current waveform, energy processing, number of switches, and control loops. The major advantages and disadvantages of these approaches are highlighted, and their suitable applications are discussed in detail. The findings indicate that multiple solutions exist achieving sinusoidal line current, with a focus on meeting regulatory standards while addressing practical concerns such as size, cost, and efficiency. The analysis concludes that while unity power factor is often viewed as the ideal scenario, compliance with regulations can be achieved with various levels of harmonic presence in the line current. These insights contribute to the ongoing discourse on the optimization of power factor correction methods in compliance with modern electrical standards.
