The welding of duplex stainless steels, specifically SAF 2205, presents challenges in achieving a balanced microstructure consisting of both ferrite and austenite phases. This study aims to investigate the impact of cooling rate on the mechanical and corrosion properties of SAF 2205 duplex stainless steel weldments. An experimental procedure was employed using eight 40 cm weldments prepared through gas tungsten arc welding, with half subjected to slow cooling in air and the other half rapidly cooled in cold water. Subsequent metallographic examinations were conducted using scanning electron microscopy to analyze the microstructural characteristics. Results indicate that fast water-cooled welds exhibit superior resistance to both pitting and intergranular corrosion compared to those cooled in air. Additionally, while the cooling rate affects the toughness of the weld, it does not significantly alter the intergranular corrosion behavior of the weldments. The findings highlight the complex interplay between cooling rate, microstructure, and resultant corrosion resistance in duplex stainless steel welds, providing valuable insights for optimizing welding techniques and improving material performance.
