Abstract

Language:

This article examines the concepts of positive-taxis power and negative-taxis power within the framework of power theory. The objective is to classify power based on various responses to stimuli, which the author refers to as sociotaxis, a concept that expands the biological term 'taxis' into the social domain. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, the author utilizes examples from historical practices of governance to illustrate how rulers have balanced civil governance and martial enforcement throughout different eras. The results reveal that during periods of social upheaval or political instability, negative-taxis power is prioritized, while in times of national unity and political stability, positive-taxis power gains prominence. This balance of power types serves as an optimal strategy for rulers in maintaining security and governance. The analysis showcases the relevance of understanding these different forms of power in contemporary sociopolitical contexts, suggesting that the historical interplay between these types of power continues to influence governance strategies today.
