Single-phase switch mode ac-dc converters are increasingly used as front-end rectifiers due to their high efficiency and power density. This study reviews various wave shaping methods focused on improving efficiency and power factor. The research specifically analyzes improved active current wave shaping methods and employs simulations using PSIM software. A detailed analysis is conducted on an active method using a boost converter topology, where a MOSFET switch is driven by rectangular pulses of continuously varying duty cycle over the supply voltage period. The findings underline the performance improvements in power factor and total harmonic distortion achievable through these active methods, while contrasting them with passive solutions that are more favorable at lower power levels. The results affirm that modifications in the input stage of the diode rectifier filter capacitor circuit can lead to notable enhancements in power factor and inputs current distortion, although challenges remain with size and effectiveness at different power levels.
