Abstract

Language:

Heap leaching is a process used for the extraction of valuable elements from a heap of material, encompassing unprocessed ore, sub-ore, low-grade gangue, and artificial materials. This study aims to examine the mineralogical aspects that influence heap leaching efficiency, focusing on the nature of ore and gangue minerals, their textural relationships, and the impact on the leaching process. The methodology involved an exploration of various materials suitable for heap leaching, including sub-ore grade rock and oxidized mineral sources, as well as evaluating the physical characteristics that affect extractability. Results indicate that the accessibility of ore minerals is significantly affected by the textural properties of the gangue and the presence of fractures or pores in the heap. Factors such as freeze-thaw processes, oxidation of sulphides, and rock fragmentation techniques, like blasting, can enhance permeability and thus, leaching outcomes. The findings highlight that while certain materials, such as oxidized base metal minerals, can facilitate efficient extraction due to their porous nature, the presence of deleterious substances may hinder the process. Understanding these mineralogical factors is critical for improving the economics of heap leaching operations.
