Rechargeable battery use is expected to continue growing with the increasing prevalence of portable electronics, appliances, and tools. This educational module introduces battery management and recycling issues to a general audience, specifically focusing on nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. The objective is to educate users about the environmental impacts of battery systems, including life cycle emissions and energy use for NiCd batteries. Methodologically, the module estimates these impacts while briefly explaining current battery collection and recycling practices and providing an expression for estimating the NiCd recycling rate. It also discusses public policy and emphasizes the importance of consumer education regarding battery use and disposal. The results indicate that while rechargeable batteries offer benefits, they still pose significant environmental challenges and necessitate careful management. Ultimately, as regulations increase and the awareness of toxic materials' effects rise, the fate of hazardous materials within the battery industry requires focused attention and strategic planning.
