In recent years, pull-off adhesion testing of coatings has gained increased attention, prompting a rise in the production of new testing models and specifications within the coating industry. This paper aims to explore the principles and implications of pull-off testing, focusing on what is measured and the significance of the results obtained. Employing a portable adhesion tester, typically aligned with standards such as ASTM D4541, AS 3894.9, and ISO 4624, the methodology involves securing a loading fixture to the coating surface and gradually applying force until detachment occurs at the weakest interface. The study highlights a common misconception regarding adhesion strength measurement, revealing that the test often measures different properties independent of bonding levels between interfaces. It also discusses variations in devices available on the market that can significantly impact test results. Ultimately, the findings emphasize the importance of understanding testing methodologies not only for reporting pull-off strength but also for accurately interpreting the failure location within coating systems.
