This study investigates the uranium adsorption performance of five ion-exchange resins, including Dowex 1, Dowex 21K 16-30 (fresh), Dowex 21K 16-30 (regenerated), Purofine PFA600/4740, and ResinTech SIR-1200, in the context of groundwater treatment at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The objective is to identify the most suitable resin for uranium removal from high-nitrate groundwater using batch tests. Various test conditions, including unspiked and nitrate-spiked source water from well 299-W19-36, were evaluated. The results indicate that four resins, namely Dowex 1, Dowex 21K 16-30 (fresh), Purofine PFA600/4740, and ResinTech SIR-1200, demonstrated similar uranium adsorption efficiencies, with Kd values ranging from approximately 15,000 to 95,000 ml/g under high-nitrate conditions. Notably, lowering the pH did not significantly impact their adsorption efficiency. In contrast, tests using unspiked source water revealed much higher Kd values, indicating the influence of nitrate concentration on uranium adsorption. Additionally, the study found that the regenerated resin exhibited significantly lower performance compared to its fresh counterpart. These findings contribute to the resin selection process for efficient uranium treatment in contaminated groundwater systems.
