Abstract

Language:

In the modern practice of copper production, increasing attention is directed towards the treatment of low-percentage sulphide ores that conventional methods cannot process. Particularly, processes to obtain copper from complex sulphide concentrates, unsuitable for pyrometallurgical approaches, are under investigation. The extraction of copper from such raw materials is often achieved through leaching procedures. As chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most prevalent copper sulphide mineral, substantial research focuses on its behavior in leaching processes. This study reviews the kinetics and mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation using various oxidants, aimed at developing a copper extraction process that adheres to rigorous technological, economic, and environmental standards. It presents an overview of existing knowledge on chalcopyrite leaching and the phenomena associated with chalcopyrite oxidation in acidic sulphate and chloride solutions. Addressing the increasing challenges in copper production from poorer raw materials remains a central concern of this research area.
