Rising costs in the mining industry have necessitated a search for alternative methods for the recovery of metals from deposits that are no longer economically or environmentally exploitable by conventional mining. This study aimed to develop a laboratory model and undertake an experimental programme to determine the influence of temperature, aeration, material compression, and material extraction on copper recovery via in situ leaching with H₂SO₄ and Fe³⁺. The shrinking core model was employed for recovery estimation. Experimental results indicated a significant improvement in copper recovery, with a rise from 19.9% to 29.8% at elevated temperatures, and a notable increase from 19.9% to 33.8% with enhanced aeration. The economic evaluation found that the increased costs associated with mining and processing must be balanced against improved recovery rates, ultimately affecting the net present value estimation of projects. This comprehensive analysis highlights the potential of in situ leaching as a viable alternative to conventional mining methods, with lower operational costs and reduced environmental impact.
