Abstract

Language:

This study focuses on the activity of iron oxide (FeO) in steelmaking slag, which is crucial for understanding the oxidation reactions that occur during steel refining. The objective is to experimentally measure the activity of FeO in these slags and to develop a correlation for estimating the concentration of FeO as a function of temperature and the slag's chemical composition. The methodology involves equilibrating liquid iron with molten slag and using gas mixtures to attain a representative measurement of the FeO activity. Results indicate a strong thermodynamic relationship between the activity of oxygen in the metal and FeO in the slag, supporting the principle that equilibrium conditions dictate the behavior of these elements. The findings contribute valuable insights for the field of process metallurgy, particularly regarding the efficiency of steelmaking processes. By establishing a correlation between feO concentration, temperature, and composition, this research provides a practical tool for steel manufacturers seeking to optimize production and enhance product quality.
