This exploratory research study aims to serve as a primer on key concepts related to the development, status, practices, and other constructs of green supply chain management (GSCM). It involves adopting an environmentally-conscious mindset in conducting company-level strategic, tactical, and operational processes, closely tied to the broader concept of sustainability. Given that the field is still in its developing stage, an extensive literature review was conducted on the discipline and the underlying topics that nurture this emerging academic and practice field, including supply chain management, sustainability, and environmental operational initiatives. Several concrete approaches used to investigate GSCM initiatives are introduced, along with the role of organizational factors in adopting environmental innovations based on survey results. The study advances the proposition that organizational capabilities significantly impact the adoption of GSCM practices and reveals crucial background information regarding the relationship among supply chain management, social responsibility, and environmental consciousness. A key implication is that companies must embrace the importance of collaborating with their partners to improve the social responsibility performance of the supply chain, creating a 'green multiplier effect' throughout the supply chain. The study concludes with a clear need for further research to establish the potential link among GSCM initiatives, competitiveness, and economic performance, providing a stimulus for companies to green their supply chains.
