The smelting process of the old reverberatory furnace has undergone various improvements, yet it faces challenges in handling increased copper losses in slag and rising environmental concerns. This study investigates advancements in copper flash smelters achieved by enhancing oxygen enrichment in the process, which has shown to boost production capacity while adhering to environmental requirements. It suggests a shift from conventional reverberatory methods to modern flash smelting processes, emphasizing improvements in the feed system and burner design. The successful revamping of the PASAR smelter in the Philippines is highlighted as a case study, demonstrating significant capacity increases of over 25% achieved through new equipment installations and modifications. The paper also addresses the financial considerations associated with adopting these technology upgrades and their implications for operational costs. Overall, the research underscores the potential for substantial advancements in flash smelting technologies to meet both production and environmental standards effectively.
