This study explores the optimization of processing costs related to lithium extraction from clay, aiming to enhance its cost-competitiveness compared to traditional sources such as brines and hard rock ores. The objective was to identify and assess various cost-reduction scenarios, focusing on the levelized costs associated with different leaching methods, including hydrochloric acid leaching and sulfuric acid leaching. A systematic approach was employed to evaluate scenarios involving significant reductions in major cost drivers, including reagent costs up to 70%. Results indicate that implementing strategic cost reductions can lead to a substantial decrease in the break-even costs of lithium production, making clay sources more competitive in the global market. These findings highlight the potential for improved economic viability in lithium extraction processes, particularly as the demand for lithium continues to rise in various industries, including energy storage and electric vehicles.
