Quantum tunneling through a potential barrier, which plays a critical role in nuclear fusion, is influenced by the intricate structure of the involved systems and their intrinsic degrees of freedom. This study observes a significant increase in the fusion probability for heavy deformed nuclei, while the case of light exotic nuclei such as 6He, 11Li, and 11Be—referred to as 'halo' nuclei—remains a topic of debate. The neutron matter in these halo nuclei extends beyond the typical nuclear interaction range, leading to conflicting theories about its impact on fusion processes. While one perspective suggests that the neutron halo enhances fusion likelihood, another argues that the weak binding of these nuclei might suppress fusion. Furthermore, this investigation examines alternative reaction pathways known as direct processes in the context of fusion dynamics. These contrasting views highlight the complex interplay between nuclear structure and the mechanisms driving fusion, emphasizing the need for further research to clarify the underlying physics and enhance our understanding of fusion in both conventional and exotic nuclei. This work aims to elucidate the parameters that influence fusion likelihood in these nuclear systems.
