Marine litter is considered a common concern of humankind that poses a serious risk to marine life, human health and the economy. One of the most abundant and harmful types of marine litter is abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear. This thesis conducts a life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with the retrieval and waste management of derelict fishing gear. The objective is to quantify and analyze the environmental burdens resulting from different management strategies of fishing gear, incorporating various life cycle stages from production to disposal. The methodology includes the collection of data on material types, retrieval processes, and waste management options, followed by an application of LCA principles to assess potential impacts on environmental categories such as resource depletion, toxicity, and greenhouse gas emissions. Results indicate significant differences in environmental performances among management strategies, highlighting that effective retrieval and proper disposal can mitigate harmful impacts associated with derelict fishing gear. The findings are instrumental for policy-making and operational strategies aimed at reducing marine litter and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
