Abstract

Language:

The study investigates the production and utilization of biodiesel derived from Jatropha curcas oil and its blends with diesel fuel in a variable compression ratio diesel engine. Biodiesel was produced via transesterification, characterized according to ASTM 6571 standards, and blended with diesel in various proportions (B0, B10, B20, B40) for comparative testing. Engine experiments were carried out on a TD43F variable compression test rig to evaluate performance (power, torque, brake-specific fuel consumption) and emission characteristics, supported by statistical analysis using SPSS. Results show that the B20 blend produced lower emissions than all other tested fuel samples while delivering power and torque outputs superior to other blends and second only to pure diesel. The B40 blend generated very low smoke density with a noticeable spicy odor. A key finding is that increasing the biodiesel proportion in the blend tends to increase brake power and torque while reducing brake-specific fuel consumption, indicating that properly formulated Jatropha biodiesel blends can improve engine performance and emissions relative to conventional diesel.
