The Metallography Lab Course at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of metallographic analyses essential for materials science and engineering. The objective of the course is to familiarize participants with various methods of analyzing the structure and microstructure of materials. A structured methodology is employed, which includes sample extraction, mounting, grinding, polishing, contrasting, imaging, and both qualitative and quantitative analyses. This hands-on approach allows students to engage with actual processes and interpretations of metallographic samples. Key results indicate that students gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge necessary for their future careers in materials science and engineering. The incorporation of relevant literature further enriches the learning experience. Overall, this lab course serves as a vital foundation for students to apply metallographic techniques in their future academic and professional pursuits.
