Abstract

Language:

The safety of radioactive wastes in the repository depends on its capacity to confine radioactivity from being released to the biosphere. This study aims to examine the solubility and leaching processes of selected radionuclides, specifically strontium (Sr), cobalt (Co), and iron (Fe), and their implications for the safety assessment of radioactive waste repositories. The experimental methodology involved irradiating cement blocks that encapsulate these elements with gamma rays at doses of 40, 120, and 240 kGy to simulate radiation effects. The research measured the leaching rates, solubility limits, and the pH of the leachate for both non-irradiated and irradiated cement blocks. Results reveal that gamma radiation significantly alters the pH of the leachate, indicating a relationship between radiation exposure, leaching rates, and solubility of radionuclides. Furthermore, this study highlights the relevance of understanding these processes in improving safety measures for radioactive waste management in repositories.
