Abstract

Language:

Since 1973, Bamangwato Concessions Limited (BCL) has operated a nickel-copper smelter in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana, treating concentrates from local and custom feed mines. The objective of this study was to improve economic and environmental performance by identifying key economic drivers to maximize revenue at the BCL smelter. We collaborated with Xstrata Process Support (XPS), which developed advanced metallurgical modeling techniques after analyzing critical plant performance data. The methodology involved identifying production bottlenecks, calculating recoveries of nickel, copper, and cobalt, managing slag volumes, and increasing custom feed capacity through various feasibility analyses of unit process operations. Results showed that the implementation of these techniques significantly contributed to optimizing production and enhancing the economic bottom line of the smelter. The study highlights the practical application of advanced modeling in enhancing the metallurgical processes and the overall economic efficiency of the BCL smelter.
