Abstract

Language:

This chapter covers the normal problems encountered in the building of an ore concentrating facility. To produce such a facility in today's environment requires correlation by the engineers involved of geologic data, mine planning, scheduling, future planning, water resources, power, land availability, testing, design, start-up and environmental considerations. The ultimate result sought in a process mill design program is a plant that optimally balances capital costs, operating costs, ease of operation, tonnage throughput, concentrate grade, recovery, maintenance, and start-up speed. Effective planning should commence during the early stages of mine exploration, incorporating ore testing and establishing a defined time-sequence program throughout the project. This program must coordinate with mine exploration and planning, constantly updating to reflect timing and sequencing changes. Challenges faced during the design process encompass both technical and aesthetic considerations, particularly concerning tailing dams and waste piles, which necessitate environmental stewardship. Detailed monitoring of design is essential to identify and correct errors before construction, with modeling serving as a beneficial tool in this regard. As the project progresses, cost estimates will likely rise, requiring the process engineer to be vigilant about subcontracted components to avoid unexpected complications.
