This study investigates the sorption and desorption of arsenate onto magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and the influence of phosphate on these processes. The primary objectives were to assess the sorption characteristics of arsenate in both the presence and absence of phosphate, analyze the competitive sorption dynamics between these two ligands, and evaluate the subsequent desorption of arsenate facilitated by phosphate. The methodology involved experimental setups using uncalcined and calcined LDHs subjected to varying conditions of pH and reaction time to ascertain their sorption capacities. Results indicated a preferential sorption of phosphate over arsenate across all tested LDH variants, with notable differences in behavior between calcined and uncalcined samples. The data revealed that the competitive interaction between arsenate and phosphate was significantly influenced by factors such as pH levels and the order of ligand addition. Additionally, the final molar ratio of arsenate to phosphate sorbed could be manipulated by adjusting reaction conditions. The study concluded that phosphate has a greater affinity for LDHs than arsenate, which has implications for the understanding of contaminant interactions in soils composed of such materials.
