Abstract

Language:

This study examines the influence of thiourea on various parameters during nickel electrodeposition from acidic sulfate solutions. The primary objective was to evaluate the effect of varying thiourea concentrations on cathodic current efficiency (CE), deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, surface morphology, and polarization behavior of the cathode. Methodologically, tests were conducted for two hours at 60 °C, measuring the CE as thiourea concentration increased from 2 to 40 mg dm⁻³. Results indicated a slight decrease in CE of 3 to 4 percent at higher thiourea concentrations, along with a significant deterioration in deposit quality characterized by increased surface defects and contamination. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that lower thiourea concentrations led to depolarization behavior of the cathode, while mixed behavior was noted at concentrations above 10 mg dm⁻³. Additionally, thiourea's presence altered the peak intensities of crystal planes, indicating its substantial role in influencing nickel deposition kinetics and electrochemical characteristics.
