This study investigates the cash cost performance of mining operations in South Africa, specifically focusing on key minerals such as gold, platinum, and coal. The objective is to analyze economic contributions of these minerals to the national economy, alongside creating an algorithm that constructs industry cost curves essential for cash cost performance evaluation. Utilizing various economic data, including gross domestic product contributions from the mining sector, employment statistics, and sales rankings, we employed a quantitative methodology to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing operational efficiency in mineral production. The findings reveal that platinum group metals significantly lead in sales and employment within the mining sector, underpinning their crucial role in the South African economy. Furthermore, the algorithm developed provides a robust tool for understanding cash costs associated with mineral extraction, enabling better decision-making for stakeholders in the mining industry. By synthesizing economic indicators, the study confirms the strategic importance of these minerals and highlights areas for potential optimization in cost management practices. This research contributes to the wider discourse on mining economics and offers practical insights for industry practitioners seeking to enhance their operational strategies.
