Grassland is ubiquitous in Ireland, covering over 91% of agricultural land, and grass biomethane is emerging as a sustainable biofuel with a favorable energy balance. This study aims to evaluate a two-phase grass digestion system, particularly focusing on the leaching process involved in anaerobic digestion. A methodology involving a dry batch leaching stage (hydrolysis and acidogenesis) followed by treatment of the leachate in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) was developed. Four scenarios were experimentally tested, analyzing the impacts of flooding versus sprinkling of grass silage sourced from either pit or bale, on gas production efficiency. Results indicated that sprinkling of bale silage is the preferable method, achieving a predicted gas production of 0.4 m³ of CH4/kg of volatile solids added within a 40-day retention time. This efficiency is comparable to that of established wet continuous systems with longer retention times, suggesting that the two-phase process may optimize retention times and overall digestion efficiency.
