The trend toward Microgrids (MGs) is significantly increasing by employing Distributed Generators (DGs), which leads to new challenges, especially in fault detection. This paper proposes an algorithm based on the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the grid voltages to detect fault events in MGs. The algorithm integrates THD with estimated amplitude voltages and the zero-sequence component for fault detection and identification. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, demonstrating its capability to detect various types of faults in minimal time. The results indicate that the algorithm effectively enhances the reliability and efficiency of fault detection in microgrid systems.
