Abstract

Language:

Production of nickel from laterite ores has been a staple for over a century, yet the majority of the world’s nickel supply has traditionally come from sulfide sources. This study aims to project future trends in nickel production, with a particular emphasis on laterite ores. The methodology includes a comprehensive review of historical data regarding nickel production, an analysis of recent operational costs related to laterite projects, and an evaluation of associated risks. Results indicate that while production from sulfide sources is expected to stabilize, the forthcoming decade will witness a significant increase in capacity driven largely by laterite ore processing. The economic implications of new laterite projects will play a crucial role in influencing both supply and pricing in the nickel market. This paper discusses how historical trends and future projections will shape the landscape of laterite nickel production and its development pathways.
